You forgot to mention that there was a tournament level cap imposed. One of the competitors, Clyde, was completely F2P. Many of the others were far from maxed, they probably spent way less than $1000. Some of my card levels are higher than the tournament standard cap, and I haven’t spent a dime. I know many others…
