It’s really hard. Stories can change AS you’re writing them; you’ll stumble on something better and have to retcon. Remember when How I Met Your Mother stuck with its originally intended ending? Yeah.

Seriously....I can make a long list of beloved series that whiffed on their endings; it seems almost inevitable when so much hype is put upon mortal writers. Yet this one nailed it. Somehow.

It’s a far worse problem when you factor in the early and premature cancellations most of these shows wind up getting. A bad first season is far more damaging if you only have 20 or 30 episodes to play with altogether.
