Staying away from Ikea unless your broke is ridiculous. You just need to know what's built well and what's not. You can't rely on the catalog though - you really need to see the items in person.

The issue I run into is how must time I must invest in order to become good enough to know what I'm doing and not suck. I mostly play multiplayer or co-op and don't like playing when I feel like I'm holding the team back. I mainly play L4D2 now because I'm pretty damn good at it and have a million hours into it.

Anyone with electronics knowledge can build something like this these days. People need to step up their game and learn how to make something aesthetically pleasing as well. Unfortunately it looks like few take the extra effort to do so.
