My dad’s an MG enthusiast and I’ve spent my entire life hearing about the evils of BMC and British Leyland. It’s legit like getting into a conversation with someone who’s still upset about the South losing the Civil War.

FWIW, I had a friend with a similar strategy that seemed to work well — at a bar, he’d order a shot of high-quality tequila and a glass of seltzer. Even sipped, the tequila hit home and loosened him up pretty quickly, while the seltzer was his glass-in-the-hand drink that he’d nurse the rest of the night.

I honestly take a certain amount of comfort in the fact that there are people who keep concours-level copies of my classic car in their garages. I daily drive mine, and I’d feel guilty as hell if no one were keeping a nice one or two pristine for future generations.

FWIW — I’ve never seen her standup, but Megan Koester’s Vice articles are typically pretty solid. Depressing, but solid.

It’s worth remembering that the current education system is a tool to enforce class, even though it is cast in popular belief as the great equalizer of a meritocracy.

Yup. If we all benefit from the security that the military provides, then we should all be prepared to pay the cost of that military too — and sometimes, that cost is participation.

Great question, and I’m glad you addressed it. I’ve never wanted to be anything like my teetotaling parents, and I have to admit — it’s still one of my biggest fears about attempting sobriety.
