What’s ironic is all my Chinese relatives complain about how “icky” Western food makes them feel. To them, Western food brings up images of oily, greasy, tasteless muck that’s fun to eat but bad for your health.

You’re supposed to care about this because Kahlo consciously dressed in a way that was meant to make a statement. It was part of (and she intended it to be) her expression. I’m not sure whether this exhibit is addressing that?
I don’t have anything to add except thank you for taking the time to write this out. This reminds me of the old Jezebel readership, and when I enjoyed reading the thoughtful comment discussions.
Yeah, as a WOC who looked up prairie dresses to buy in response to this article...totally doing this to reclaim my purely theoretical WASP ancestry...not because I think they look pretty and comfy.
Talk to the women he did this to first. No indication he ever did that, or even checked in with them before releasing this story.
That’s not what they meant though—at least, not what I got from it. Of course you shouldn’t accept abuse from someone with BPD. Their point was about the stigma of the BPD label. I was initially misdiagnosed as borderline as a teen, and when I looked it up it was just an endless barrage of articles, forums, comments…
People say hindsight is 20/20 but somehow my gut tells me this doesn’t capture the essence of what went wrong. Maybe it’s just a bad interview, or I’m not getting it, or maybe it’s still too close and/or complicated to process beyond predictable soundbites (cue the billion ‘EMAILS’ jokes already revving up).
I don’t mean to be obtuse, but why not though? It’s a story set in the backdrop of a traditionally blue collar area wrecked by economic forces and meth. I suppose I don’t see how blue-collar is necessarily an economic status. You can be rich and poor blue collar, yeah?
That’s what made me question it, but then I decided maybe it does count. The horrible effect of meth on families in the story is a very blue collar plot conflict to me. A huge contrast to the Breaking Bad treatment.
Does Winter’s Bone count?
From 2015: “He told The Sunday Times newspaper: ‘’I’m not smart enough to navigate this without coming across like a douche, but I was dealt a good hand. I never had to worry about cops pulling me over or somebody sexually assaulting me. I never had to worry about clean water. A lot of what I have was given by sheer…
Ok sure, but even if you’re going by strict definition of blue collar then yes his parents and upbringing were exactly that.
How the fuck can she not understand the decades of toil, of marginalization and hurt, that those who came before her went through—so that she, with her wealth and fame, could sail through transitioning without much hurt to her wealth and fame, and then proceed to vote to stomp out the continued efforts of other…
But you can’t really deny that he comes from a ‘different’ background though. I’m pretty sure that’s what he meant.
Ohohoho, but this woman is *50*, not 60.
Thank you for posting this. I would never say that there should be an expectation for the victim of abusive behaviours to stay and “reform” the abuser—definitely not. But based on personal experiences since childhood (when this was my favourite movie), I’ve really gained a newfound appreciation for the Belle/Beast…
Thank you.
Um, ok, but please explain how charging forward *without* initiating a conversation with an Asian person—someone who’s known for publicly speaking out about these issues—would be any better? To me as an Asian-American that would be even more insensitive. This whole thing started with inclusion issues, so the remedy…
I don’t think Swinton is racist...BUT, I think her schtick of always being “above it all” has turned against her in this case. Her kneejerk reaction to any controversy in Hollywood is something along the lines of “guys what’s the big deal we’re all just spirits *swans away*”, except in this situation it comes across…
