It also is a benefit to players who perform at a high level as they can frontload their guaranteed money and then once the backend of their deal hits, they hit the open market and get more guaranteed money.

Is this really Deadspin? This is common with trades. The team he’s on is going to cut him, the team that trades for him is doing so to gain exclusivity, but they restructure his contract giving him more guaranteed money so they don’t have to take on the cap hit. It’s more like “restructure with us or take your chances
