No, you’d be mostly wrong. Depending on the state, your gas tax pays for as little as 7% or at most 71%. Everybody pays for the roads through their regular state and federal taxes, in one way or another.

Because people without a transponder are more profitable. 

How else are they supposed to recover the cost of some douchebag in a massive RV coming in, ruining the roads, parking at a Wal-Mart, leaving their garbage in the parking lot and leaving? They don’t go to local restaurants. They don’t stay in hotels. They don’t inject any real money into the local economy.

100%. It overrides absolutely everything else in deciding which car to buy. MPG = CO2 = Pollution = Climate Change = Your Children in a future resource war. I want to generate as little pollution as possible. I’m not a hypermiler but I’m light on the throttle and try to keep my L/100KM as low as I can.
