This was inscribed on the base of the Liberty Place monument in New Orleans. Do you think preserving this is a good idea?

Come on, now, it was about states’ rights. Specifically, their rights to own people.

I have yet to see a “The Civil War wasn’t really about slavery” poster effectively refute the meaning of Stephens’ Cornerstone Speech. I always have great fun citing the speech, then asking 21st century Internet posters why they know more about the Confederacy’s motivations than its Vice-President.

I’m going to ignore your “It’s about more than slavery” argument, and just get to the point about removing all these monuments. Let’s say we need to preserve a few for historical sake (I don’t think we do, but let’s have the discussion). How many would be appropriate? 10? Maybe 25?

No the question is, why have we put up with them being displayed for so long? I’ve been wondering this since I was a fucking child in grade school.

I can already tell 2020 is going to be a tight race

going traitor and attacking your fellow countrymen is not the same as being invaded by a foreign power.

they should be moved to a museum, not kept in places like in the city square or in front of town hall or a courthouse

I’m a real American, and as such I refuse to support trophies for 2nd place finishes, so all these need to be torn down.

regardless of why you think they were fighting, they were traitors, every last fucking one of them. traitors should get nothing.

Read the Article of Secession filed by the Confederate states. Every single one uses states’ rights in order to defend the institution of slavery. There is no other issue (taxation, commerce, etc.) mentioned except insofar as it pertains to slavery.

They belong in museums, and nowhere else.

These are monuments celebrating the end of Reconstruction in a city where a willing group of mixed race soldiers were abandoned by Confederate leaders. The only argument for keeping them up is as example of the sins of the city’s past. How many cities want to keep monuments to people who failed them?

when David Duke and the KKK are on your side, you might want to rethink what you’re fighting for

Remember? Sure.

LOL NO. Tear that shit down. No one’s gonna forget the Civil War. You know why? SLAVERY. Do you see any monuments to Hitler in Germany? No. You know why? HE FUCKING LOST.

The civil war was entirely about slavery and every modern day confederate sympathizer is a racist and should be investigated for sedition.

I don’t think anyone is trying to erase history here. The problem is that these heroic-stylized monoment hold these men and what they stood for up as, well, heroes. How many countries do you know of that, following a civil war, insurrection, coupe, or any other major in-fighting erected statues and momentment of the

Some Nazis weren’t JUST fighting to exterminate the Jewish people. They don’t deserve recognition either. They were still monsters and deserve no honor.

Hmm...the casual racists are at odds with the hardcore racists. Since I don’t have a dog in that race, I’m going with Giant Meteor hitting wherever they happen to be.
