I know in Queensland, once you reached certain level of martial arts training, you had to go register with the police. Any assault by someone with a certain level of training is automatically classed as assault with a weapon.

Two things:

This is an ugly side of MMA. It is easy for sociopaths to feel vindicated or encouraged to be just as aggressive and violent outside of the sport as they are inside. I honestly think (and hope) it will be used to highlight just how evil and horrible he is.
