sorry but W210 facelifted are considered the ones you have to stay away from. MY uncle had e320 1996 which is essentially W124 in another body (still straight 6 M104 engine) and becasue that car was so reliable he then got 2000 e320 with V6 which has nothing but problems. that car turned him away from Mercedes.

4 cylinder 1.5l engine from our LADA 21099. that thing has so much metal noise anywhere over 3000 rpm it was horrible. it worked fine though.

That is what I did trying to pass over a truck in the tiny Hyundai I20 in Australia. Shifter 6 to 2 missing 4th gear. Luckily scared by the viscious rev I clutched it and everything turned out ok. that was a rental car too....
