Keep your old consoles and it is not an issue. OG PS3 plays PS1, PS2, and naturally PS3 games without emulation either. Sony is not forcing anyone to buy anything.

As much as I hate Apple give these a watch. The X and Note 8 scored the same as a Nokia 3310 on a 1000 foot drop test which shattered the backs on both but the phones still worked fine.
