I owned an 06 wagon from new up until last year. If he bought it used and abused then my first guess is that he is describing the symptoms of a dirty throttle body. Also, even though the manual says to, headlight bulb removal does not require bumper removal.

Zx11d1 owner here. Aside from range, the bus is a better bike in every way. Dont care if its ugly. 

Such a great all round bike and flexible sport tourer. Lots if us older guys appreciated it for the relaxed bike it is. Nice balanced bike with a hell of a motor.
