I think F-4's biggest issue was the AIM-7 reliability (15-29% success rate). AIM-7 sucked. It sucked from Vietnam all the way through Desert storm. They ended up relying on sidewinders with there big 50% kill rate. Relying on sidewinders and then gun pods pretty much erased some of the advantage of the F-4's radar…
