Caldor! Been a long time since I’ve heard that name :) We had a Golden Circle that became a Caldor, and then Wal-Mart arrived & everything died.

Yeah... I’ve never really been out of the grays, so I’m “risking” nothing. But I will say that I had an exchange with a jez writer recently that left me feeling very soured on pretty much all of gawker media. I’ve been reading & commenting way less since. I don’t expect perfection, but I do expect better than…
I love Adam. One of the best writers at Gawker Media & one of the few #onhere who seems to really understand ethical stakes. Happy to see he spoke up about this. :)
I completely agree. The comparison shows why women are often still the ones doing the majority of admin and service work in the academy (at least at the department level, at least in the humanities where I am). Male academics, especially the white ones, are far more likely to shout about how great they are and far…
Wouldn’t it be awesome if primary voters went with Trump and Sanders & to hell with establishment party politics & then everyone discovered Jill Stein & we had our first green president and first woman president?
Saw this comparative word cloud graphic on twitter awhile back regarding the gendered vocabulary of academic letters of recommendation:
I just can’t take it! It’s on this list because I hate what I don’t understand. I fear what I cannot know. I worry that if I look at these spectral shapeshifters too long, they’ll suddenly sprout heart-shaped sparklers or entire chuppahs.
There have to be some pro-choice chemists willing to go badass, buy some RVs, and set up mifepristone and misoprostol labs out in the desert or woods somewhere. If we can figure out how to make and distribute meth despite its illegality, I think we can also make some high quality mife and miso, no?
Oregon just keeps doing things that make me really conflicted about wanting to get a good job and get the fuck out of here.
I dealt with lake effect snow living in Western NY until I was almost 30. Now live in Oregon. I’ll take the rainy winters any day. Where I live, it doesn’t really rain between May/June and October/November. That said, there’s not much sun from Nov-April, so it can get kinda depressing.
Dear AP: Stop referring to rape and sexual assault as “having sex.” Just fucking stop doing it. Cosby may have “wanted to have sex with” these “young women,” but as soon as he chose drugging them rather than, like, obtaining consent, it becomes motheringfucking rape, okay? And the fact that Cosby repeatedly did choose…
Wow. It’s not that I’m surprised people like your MIL exist, it’s just that, after living 3000 miles from my family for almost a decade, I’ve grown used to my self-created bubble of neoliberals, leftist progressives, and uber radical queers... So even if the neoliberals are just conservatives in sheep’s clothing, they…
omg thanks for the reminder! i didn’t get to see it when it was in theaters & had since entirely forgotten about it.
WHAT. A. FUCKING. CLUELESS. LITTLE. BITCH.
I have ADHD. I’m a teacher. I regularly ask my students, “does that make sense?” I don’t think this undermines my authority, but if it does, I’m okay with it. My brain works differently from the majority of my students’ brains. My logic is not linear. Sometimes I go on tangents, or use an example off the top of my…
Um. First, calm down. Second, how is calling her a “sexual harasser” not also an “unfounded insight” at this point? Third, since when do we automatically trust anonymous student reports and an overpaid university admin whose #1 priority is optics and marketing? Fourth, do you see how the corporatization of the…
I feel the same. As a teacher who works hard to make her classroom a safe space and occasionally uses curse words or makes potentially inappropriate remarks (discussion-based class on argumentation), I can see this playing out any number of ways. There are a lot of layers to peel back.
I’m super interested to see how this plays out. When I heard about this story yesterday, I immediately began scanning my teaching memories over the past six years. If it’s really about some off-color language and “inappropriate” jokes, then I’d easily be fired too. I’m not even in a tenure-track position & may never…
me too, moriarty. ME FUCKING TOO.
Why not both? I vote for both. :)
