Why is the idea of having facebook like messages replace IM in my gmail doesn't amuse me?

It doesn't work for me on Windows XP! It shows the system tray icon and that icon changes when iDevices are connected, although there is also a window which lingers around until the app is running. This shows nothing but some question marks some buttons and cannot be minimized. Uggh!
