He might have, because even Benchley came around. He protested the change loudly to screenwriter Carl Gottlieb, saying how it was physically impossible, but when he saw the finished film with an audience that went wild at that moment, he had to grudgingly admit that the change worked for the movie.

The ending of the book is a deliberate nod to Moby Dick, with Quint’s version of Ahab being dragged under to die with his nemesis, his very weapon being the tool of his own destruction. (The insanely wonderful Rankin/Bass 1978 television movie The Bermuda Depths borrowed its ending from both Melville AND Benchley.)
She struggled hard with depth perception for a while -- jumping up on the bed was difficult for her after the accident. But she figured it out, and muscle memory took over. Has not missed a jump anywhere in ages. It is just easy to startle her if she does not see you coming from behind her on the blind side.
The silver lining was that if it had to happen to one of our dogs, it was a blessing that it happened to her. None of the rest of our dogs would have survived the first day. Sydney is one tough broad.
