I think that for American soccer, sending a percentage of talented young players to Europe while at the same time taking in a percentage of older Euro stars like Rooney and Zlatan is an ok place to be.
There’s different levels of “give a shit”, I think. Only the top 3 tiers of league are professional; the fourth is semi-pro, and everything below that are amateur regional leagues run by individual German states. By the time you get down to the 11th division or so, you’re looking at what in America might be city rec…

This is essentially what the SPL does, breaking the teams apart towards the end of the season so that the top teams can play each other for hardware and places in Europe and the bottom teams can fight each other to see who doesn’t get relegated.
