I like to think she acted as a spy in honor of Steve. She speaks all the languages anyways. Getting info to the Allies and when need be beating up Nazis. Dealing with supernatural stuff the Nazis get up to that normal people can’t deal with.

The obvious solution is to breed together people who have cancer to create cancer-immune progeny. That’s science!

“Add in the class implication of tech bros “solving” a problem by throwing money at it and it’s hard for any non-fan to muster any feeling other than resentment.”
My one major bugbear with the casting of the film was that they, for some reason, felt the need to keep the ‘race balance’ the same as the original. Three white, one non-white. And having the non-white be the only one who wasn’t a scientist (even though smart in her own way) irked me, especially considering all the…
I once heard an explanation I really like. Metropolis Clark and Superman are both masks. The true Kal-El/Clark Kent is Smallville on the farm Clark.
Sorry, Tarantino was wrong.
From the early glowing reviews, it appears that Wonder Woman finally derails that gloom and doom train.
The place has changed noticeably in just the last five years, let alone the last ten. Lots of old faces left or got banned (and a couple are dead now), lots of new people replaced them, people still there after all these years have expressly stated that their opinions have changed, and so on. A lot of topics that used…
Earth eventually became a unified planet but had a good 70 year run of worldwide tensions. The idea that this would then lead to a unified culture is a bit crazy when respecting individual rights and differences is so baked into the point of Trek.
On a much lower stakes, there is Star Destroyer.net.
It is pretty standard for a subset of rabid fans to latch on to something, then ignore all cognitive dissonance as they force it into the world view that works best for them personally. A Great example is homophobic X-Men fans. Or the Christian conquerers of the colonial era. Or today’s Evangelical tax-cutters…
I get put off when the Klingons or Romulans are able to threaten anything. They should at best, be minor regional annoyances centuries or more after they had their time, if peaceful exploration and coexistence being the way forward really is the point of Trek.
I disagree with some of your points regarding some iterations of Trek but I appreciate and understand the opinion. Infinite diversity in infinite combinations. :-)
I think the best relatively-recent genre show for progressive and authentic representations of inclusion is Eureka. Hands down. I’m really critical of earth-based science fiction on those counts (for example, the otherwise awesome Stargate franchise is a huge disappointment on that front). I haven’t seen many shows as…
Armin Shimerman has this anecdote about how in different countries/regions, people will ask about Ferengis being based on <insert different outsider group>. So ideas about Star Trek and certain types of its characters/ideals really reflects more on the individual and their worldview rather than an intention from the…
People see what they want to see. The Klngons in the original show were for some analogs of communist Russia; the Romulans analogs for the communist Chinese. Cold War metaphors could easily be seen in the conflicts between the Romulans, Klingons and the Federation (a US dominated UN in space) Later fans saw Klingons…
Well, let’s be honest here for a second about Trek’s racial depictions. Yes, the human crews are harmonious, diverse, and progressive. The alien races they encounter, though, are not so much. The Vulcans are more or less a hodgepodge of Japanese stereotypes (cold, calculating, monocultural, freaky sex practices that…
Before we rage off, let’s remember
I don’t get racist Star Trek fans, it’s so divergent from the intent of EVERY iteration of the show it’s like well Nazis loving Depeche Mode. It’s a clear lack of even beginning to understand the nature of the source material it’s kind of pathetic. I’m guessing racist Trek fans aren’t big into IDIC.
