I dunno - newer cars seem to be reasonably accurate. The reading is definitely high on sunny days after my car is parked, but after driving for a few minutes it usually only reads maybe 5deg over, and is even more accurate (+/- 2-3 deg) on days <75F.

You are definitely right, but you could have gotten even more into how hard it is take an accurate ambient temperature reading period - which you mention somewhat tangentially with the patio meters.
