I would vote for PIA as well. I’ve found that VPN use is annoying if you have to turn it off/on for different services. PIA’s chrome extension makes that suuuuuper easy as long as you only care about running chrome traffic through the VPN.

I’m in the same boat. Similarly, the same disconnect exists with phone calls. I recently got Google Project Fi and switched my GV# to Project Fi and that got Google Hangout calls to show up on my Android Wear, however message stuff like this is still disconnected and overlooked. Frustrating.
