Good point. I used to smog test cars here and did forget that there are indeed ways to make it happen now that didnt exist before. There are definitely suspect cars registered here that didnt go through the required channels because they knew someone at DMV.

Okay, technically they *could* be registered in California if they met the “Direct Import Program”.  requirements and its just not economically feasible for cars that arent Skylines.  Those supposedly legal Beats and S660s likely arent.

ND, mostly because I suffered the misfortune of ownership once. It does help that the two weak points of this platform have been addressed but the one people will probably overlook because of the price point:

Our Hertz rental last month was for a Mazda3 or similar. Walked out with a Cadillac CT6, paying only the difference in registration recovery fee - like $20 over the 4 day rental.

Rented one the last time we went to Kona. Who needs a Wrangler?  Mustang is a more than capable off-roader.  I bet the underside of that car looked like a well-used range ball afterwards.

I’m with you - to a point. You left out the towing and braking setup that is included that you would have to buy if you were piecing another combo together. The brackets alone to attach the tow bar are ~$500.

And I should also note that we here at Jalopnik are a union shop, too, so I’m heavily biased.

Is it just me or would you expect a “fresh” motor to present a little better than this one does?  Not buying it.
