I wrote above that I believe in color-blind casting. But there are narrow exceptions and MLK Jr.’s life on stage is one of them. The same would apply, I think, to having a play about the Civil War. The secessionists MUST be played by whites in that context.

If it was just an exercise for the students or a workshop, I’d have no problem. But once it goes in front of a “civilian” audience, that’s something else. Something is being promoted then.

I didn’t know that! Ha!

You included yourself. Forcefully and repeatedly.

“Decontextualizing” is exactly the word I was looking for!

I like what Aziz Ansari wrote about this in New York Times. Worth a read.

The worst part is that there is no reason a superhero or sci fi character in a fake futuristic galaxy nothing like our own needs to be White. There is no racial or ethnic component that is central to the character’s reason for acting a particular way, unless imposed by the creator in the first place.

What sorcery is this?

Live in that comfort. I’m happy for you. As it is, I’m afraid to go to a mall now.

If you can’t get over someone’s comments about a situation that is not about you personally in any way, that’s YOUR problem.

That doesn’t get overplayed for some reason. But the McCartney is CONSTANTLY around during the holidays. That and a song called “Very Special Christmas” by Donny Hathaway are EVERYWHERE. It’s so so painful.

Thank you for getting it. I’ve had friends in malls literally laugh at me when the song would come on and I would start to moan in pain.

Now THAT’S festive.

What kind of 1950s realness is that?

And that damn “Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas” abomination by Paul friggin’ McCartney.

No “libruls” to vanquish. They’re not interested.

She is the reader we need right now.

Two things you don’t do:

He was SUCH a Mystery. *sigh*

No. She played on the homophobia of her idiot audience.
