In the future I can do that. Research, co-writing (although it seems shitty to say to a writer, ‘Hey, you’re asian, work with me so I can develop this character) I plan to, to try and make diverse work.
Sometimes I seriously wonder if the right answer isn’t to accept that maybe I shouldn’t try to be a writer. I’m too privileged to ever truly understand or represent the experiences of diverse characters (white, straight, male, middle class). So maybe the answer is to step away instead of vying for a spot someone else…
I’m not throwing my hands in the air. I just don’t want to fuck up. I’m terrified of publishing a work and then being branded a racist. I don’t want to perpetuate stereotypes. I’m just going to change that character to white, because I don’t know how to not be accused of stereotyping in that situation.
This isn’t the first time I’ve thought about this, or researched it. It is the first time I’ve known of an internet community filled with people who aren’t white who might have opinions on it.

Independents are an exceedingly small part of the population. Most ‘independents’ are just Republicans or Democrats with authority issues.
