I think the default when my parents got married (as it is for everyone) was to just do things the way your parents did them. Regardless of where you live or your culture, we default to what we know. It takes a lot to look at your default settings and see what works and what doesn’t and why you do certain things.

For crying out loud.

I see your point, but the author isn’t white—so let’s at least not make this about her experience with a “brown dude.”

So for you beating a developmentally disabled child is OK because “culture”. Does this also extend to throwing gay men from tops of buildings cuz you’re really on thin ice here?

Considering it sounds like he was emotionally abusive, no, it wouldn’t (necessarily) be the same.

The US Embassy/Consulate doesn’t give a single fuck about Americans abroad.

My wife is Indian. She would definitely comment on an erect donkey penis.

A member of my extended family went through something not entirely unlike this story. She went to a rural village in India on a mission after college (she was a conservative Christian at the time), intending to spend a month or two sightseeing and evangelizing. Everything went well until it was time to go home, at

Although I generally agree there is no room room for relativism when it comes to identifying behavior which is clearly wrong.

If you went to the bible belt at 21 and wrote that story—while explicitly admitting that you were young and naive and self-absorbed and not really thinking about things, as did the author here—I would read it. The author was young and misguided (and she says as much), but the experience helped her figure out her

get it, gurl

This really struck a chord with me - it reminded me of my own family story. My father is originally from India and raised Muslim (but hasn’t practiced in nearly 40 years). Even coming from a family that was very Westernized and highly educated (yes, even the women), he had a very difficult time when he married my mom,

What kind of moron uses "You have pubic hair" as a putdown

Seems to be claiming to be a gay dude. Which has me totally stumped. I kinda feel like a gay dude having any kind of opinion about vulva grooming is a bit like me having a REALLY STRONG opinion about what color they paint the curbs in Paris. I was there once (many years ago), I don't live there, I have ZERO plans to

I have to disagree with you. When the bully makes fun of the fat kid with glasses, he is telling the kid that being fat and having glasses makes him unattractive and lower than others. The same is done when the bully says, "No one would want to rape you." This puts the woman's lack of attractiveness (to the bully)

Looking at his timeline, I don't think he gives a shit. He's still arguing about censorship.

Yeah, Lindy has been awfully gracious to Jim. I looked at his twitter feed and there seem to be no threats towards him w/r/t to rape, death, or castration. Hope he speaks up against the people who are trying to censor Lindy!

Just make sure that your jokes poke fun at the perpetrators and not the victims. Lindy actually wrote an excellent guide:

THIS.

Lindy—I can't even. While I'm sure you are able to wade through this bullshit with aplomb, I offer my angriest GIFs, strongest words of condolence, and raised feminazi fist of solidarity.
