This was not the Enterprise A; that ship was introduced after The Search for Spock, after the Enterprise refit (mentioned here) was destroyed by Kirk. However, the two ships were functionally similar, if not identical. (It may have been the USS Ti-Ho (NCC-1798), rechristened as the Enterprise A.)
