I think Oscar nominations would actually cheapen the appeal of films like Gone Girl and Nightcrawler. For me, anyway. I really strongly dislike the Academy.

How did it surpass the quality of the original? By turning into a soap opera?

I'd like to think that Kubrick would experiment with digital before ultimately shunning it. It can just never match the sheer depth of image and light inherent to film.

I saw Inherent Vice at the Angelika Film Center in NoHo last year. It is an old school cinema without elevated seating and reminded me that there's always been something to gripe about. I still prefer going out and watching films on 35mm, the way it was meant to be.
