Those discussions at Jitters are just using the decades-old trope of characters having private conversations that other people cannot overhear because they are whispering but they are actually talking at normal volume so that viewers don't have to crank up their volume to hear what whispering people are saying.

There was a letter to the editor in yesterday's Chronicle-Herald from someone saying he was glad that voter turnout was so low if the people that didn't vote would have voted for the Conservative or NDP. I don't care who you vote for but being happy for lower voter turnout feels wrong.
