You can tell that they didn't know what to do with the Windom Earle story when in the finale (or penultimate episode) they had Earle just knock over the chessboard and say "Forget about the chess game, I'm just going for the Black Lodge!" At that point I was saying "What was the point of that chess match then?"

Remember the pilot where ALF drank beer? The showrunners didn't realize that the show would be such a hit with kids; once they did they dropped that trait.
