I have heard a few states have drafted trigger bills to require their EC members to vote the popular vote winner. Granted there aren’t enough states to render the EC null and void yet. Hell even if the EC votes were distributed proportionally would be a step in the right direction.

The whole thing with the BTK killer in Mindhunter reminds me of the first season of the The Killing where everyone expected the crime to be solved, but wasn’t. Now the BTK killer wasn’t as integral to Mindhunter so I doubt there will be as big a backlash.
