Yes, it is correct. If the plate isn’t readable, it’s supposed to fail inspection. I have heard of people being told that the old plates themselves are cause for failure. That isn’t correct, it has to have diminished readability/reflectivity.  They took mine as well years ago. Now my S2000 wears a front plate.
