I agree the Game of Thrones response didn’t get as toxic. I think the lack of political and social co-opting was a big factor. It was difficult to, for instance, go into some kind of “Game of Thrones is SJW propaganda” track when they did what they did with Daenerys. 

I think the difference was that with Game of Thrones, the controversy never got as toxic as the Fandom Menace did with the new trilogy.
