I think people are missing the point that, it's entirely possible to rename or remove a file extension in windows. So yes, you can determine the type that way most of the time, but when you really need to determine what file it is (lets say it gets downloaded as download.php) then the file command is great.

I would say limiting your employees get only *1* pen at a time from the supply locked closet would not be a good start. Neither would recommending the employee go to walmart to buy legal pads.
