Look, I used to be one of those people who were like "Yeah, Trump is awful but at least he wouldn't do real damage like Rubio or Cruz."

I wasn't saying those were the reasons for the electoral college (everything goes back to slavery!), but that it was a useful side effect.

This is not a bad argument.

Trump has promised to start a nuclear arms race, deport law-abiding aliens, start trade wars that hurt American workers and consumers, allow political refugees to get slaughtered and deny healthcare for the poor, more or less.

I still think it's useful. At least in theory, it prevents candidates from campaigning solely in urban centers or in single geographical regions, and would make it difficult for a single-issue candidate to beat a more well-rounded candidate who appeals to the whole country.
