I would argue that Fox has never really been wholly on board with the whole superhero thing, even though the X-movies are the longest continuously running comic book franchise
A far better deal would be for Fox to hire Marvel Studios on as consultants but not bring the characters into the MCU.
Every time I rewatch the original X-Men, I’m amazed at how short it is (around 100 minutes, minus credits) and how cheap it looks. Like Tom Scharpling observed, the big climactic battle is set at the Statue of Liberty, which sounds epic, until you realize that about 80% takes place in the gift shop.
I think the lesson learned by the studios from Blade, given the reviews and boxoffice for Batman and Robin and Spawn, was “Ok, people are open to modest budget comic book movies. Let’s try it again but we need something other than Batman. Oh look Marvel is looking to make a deal!”
Or at least have Wolverine hang out with Kitty or Jubilee.
