In my opinion, the pilot is by far the weakest episode—the fact that it's essentially the worst edited Baz Luhrman movie ever doesn't help. As has been said, it's a hot mess and a half. It's a big, sugary, neon trip. When it hits its mark, it's worth the bumpiness.
