The way i understand it is that a graphic novel is something that was published all in one go while a trade paperback is a collection of episodes all bound into one. No one outside of serious collectors seem to care though, so graphic novel usually just means "long comic book".

Transmetropolitan is amazing if you're into sci-fi/cyberpunk/gonzo-journalism (any one of those three will do).
