Reminds me of an Onion article about WWII in which (I’m paraphrasing) Japan joins forces with white supremacists in well-thought-out plan.

When I was younger (and very very dumb) I repeated a slut shaming rumor about a girl a grade older than me. It didn’t occur to me how awful what I had heard (and then said) was to the extent that I even mentioned it in passing in front of my dad. The first thing he said was to never ever ‘repeat something like that,…
Having interacted with white supremacists more than I’d like (a childhood friend dated one), they would call this a “Spanish” name, and “Spanish people are white Europeans.”
Well, that’s kinda the cherry on top of this. The sentences are long because they were convicted under Georgia’s anti-gang laws, laws that were intended to be used against black people (notably, Georgia doesn’t have hate crime laws). It’s really kind of beautiful, when you step back and look at it.
Same way my father, with an equally Hispanic name, born in PR, thinks he’s better than the rest of us. It’s a combo of a lot of things, a little self loathing, a little contempt for growing up poor and without power/privilege, getting a few lucky breaks combined with some hard work to end up better off than how you…
It’s unpresidented
I don’t understand her statement either. Is she trying to maintain her innocence for her appeal? LIke, she is hoping whatever evidence the authorities have against her can be thrown out on appeal, so she is acting like she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Like Aaron Hernandez and all of his murders?
She might as well have pulled the old classic domestic-abuser’s apology of “mistakes were made”.
Seriously— and this guy here was all climbing up on his own personal cross to lament how he’s being unfaaaairly labeled. The Confederate-flag-group-member racist, all proud and flag-waving, objects to being characterized as KKK. “This isn’t me”, he whines. Cry me a fucking river, redneck boy.
yes. thank you. “I would never” - BUT YOU DID. “That’s not me” - YES IT IS. “That’s not him” - AGAIN, YES. “I accept responsibility for what I did, but” - NOPE ON OUT OF HERE WITH THAT BUT, YOU BUTT.
That is what got me when I saw it on the news. “I am so sorry that happened to you.” not, “I am so sorry I was a horrible asshole of a person who did that to you.” She’s not sorry at all for her personal actions. She is just sorry she got caught and punished.
Evil twin?
It’s so normalized that the victim here (Alford) isn’t even complaining about the Confederate flags themselves. That poor woman— nobody should have to get used to such a thing, to the point where you publicly claim to be OK with it.
“I’m so sorry that happened to you.” = “This was a completely random thing, like a sinkhole opening up and swallowing your house, and didn’t have anything to do with our driving to your house, yelling racial slurs, et.c. I want to completely pretend that actions (especially mine) do not have consequences (especially…
Odds the state legislature amends it in the next year?
You missed the context of the thread you’re participating in. Racists feel comfortable threatening minorities these days, which is why they didn’t expect any punishment.
I have negative sympathy for these people. Actions have consequences, and your crocodile tears aren’t going to get you a thing, except for even more of my scorn. These racist hillbilly motherfuckers can go dry-fuck a rusty knife.
If only the action of one judge (plus a prosecutor willing to prosecute) was indicative of our entire justice system. Unfortunately, the police department’s actions tend to be the common outcome for these types of events.

Imagine if this was reversed.
