In the case of my friend, that's his undergraduate major. And I've seen him do some good work with structure. But when given free reign, he can do the research but he has trouble creating characters anyone feels anything about — positive or negative.

That's how I feel. When my buddy sends me a book, I definitely read it and enjoy it, but it's not like some other authors I love (Sarah Addison Allen, Tana French) where I actively salivate for their next novel to be published.

I have a friend — eh, former friend, we never talk anymore — who is like this. Spends most of his time writing. Late 20s, subsidized by parents, and the writing is awful. IRL he shows no real interest in the depth of humanity, and it shows in his writing. Blech.

The community has done its best to mitigate the WBC in town. Whenever they threaten to picket funerals in town, there is a large line of community members standing as a barrier between the bereaved and the depraved.
