The “Mary Sue” trope was useful for critiquing Original Characters in Fan Fiction. I don’t find it relevant beyond that narrow use. Buckaroo & all his Cavaliers (& the Auxiliary) were all Big Fucking Heroes. Buckaroo was almost a superhero!

Mary Sue?

Buckaroo seems a “mary sue” because he’s part of the tradition of the hero-expert, most of them based upon Clark “Doc” Savage, Jr. It’s a fine tradition, still works on shows such as Doctor Who.

I think Buckaroo Banzai is an excellent candidate for a remake. The main thing you probably can’t do with this is maintain the overt racism overtones. The aliens can be different colors; just not while in disguise. I would also avoid making Buckaroo such a male Mary Sue.

Idk...I think he’s going for a cheesy camp horror trilogy...and he is giving his daughter and her bestie a starring role in his movie... I mean, c’mon...Bratzis!!!! lol

Kevin Smith has his haters, but I just can’t ever be one. I love almost everything he does. (Comic Book Men was really pushing the limits of my love for Silent Bob...lol) I’m down for this show because I am with Kevin Smith until I am dead in the ground.
