We have life in prison for those people, which actually costs SIGNIFICANTLY less than an execution. We can save millions by not executing people and just keeping them in prison, and put that money towards victim services and crime prevention. We could literally just give that money to the victims families and it

If you really think that people against the death penatly have no idea of what crimes the inmates have been convicted of then you have never talked to someone who opposes the death penatly

I appreciate your comment. For me the arguments about innocent people being killed, costs associated, Or the death penalty not working as a deterrent are compelling, but irrelevant in my mind to the basic human rights premise that no state should execute prisoners under any circumstances if they claim civility

Nope. On its own it’s a barbaric practice with a host of moral and practical issues. That people are okay with this barbarism doesn’t make it okay.

It’s this dichotomy - justice vs revenge - that makes sentencing and punishment so difficult. When you hear of a terrible crime, especially those against children or those for which the accused has no regrets, it’s the mark of a civilized society that they’re dealt with impartially.

The problem with the cruel treatment is that prisoners would become less human. They might hurt a fellow prisoner. They might try to harm a guard or prison worker. If someone is in prison for a term less than life, you want to make sure that person can reintegrate into society when s/he is released.. Treating them

The case is horrible, but does nothing to change the fact that the state sanctioned killing should not be a part of the justice system in a civilized country.

Because it looks cleaner. That is literally the only reason why. There are plenty of ways to kill people that are less painful, but the optics of it are worse (beheading, nitrogen poisoning, execution by firing squad). We want to kill people, but we dont want to look like bad guys about it. So they dress it up as this

Are you actually kidding? Prisoners are regularly subjected to overcrowded conditions, overuse of solitary confinement, rape & abuse by other prisoners AND OFTEN PRISON STAFF. This is prison. It is not a holiday. What the actual hell are you talking about???

Again, everyone understands that people on death row were convicted of horrible crimes. That really has little to do with anti-death penalty sentiment. The only way to make the death penalty seem okay is to contrast it to the crimes of the people who it is used on. On it’s own terms, it’s a barbaric and unnecessary

Generally speaking, it’s on the person making an assertion to cite sources for that assertion.

No. But every time there is this death row debate, people point out the crimes the condemned committed, as if people who are anti-death penalty are unaware that the people on death row have been convicted of horrific crimes. We understand that. It’s beside the point, and it says a lot when, to make carrying out the

You know who dehumanized prisoners and refused to call them by name, and only by a number? The Nazis. V. is an idiot wingnut.

Prison is a holiday? Are you an idiot or just uneducated on this matter?

You can “feel” that prison conditions should be harsher and you can “feel” that would have a deterrent effect all you want, but you are wrong about the deterrent effect. Deterrence can be quantified and making prison crappier does nothing to deter crime.

Holy shit! This guy was on death row because he did something BAD? I didn’t realize that. Thanks for this illuminating insight!

A real source of pride for America.

Maybe the point is that we as a society should aspire to conduct ourselves better than the most cruel, violent small segment of our population.

By all mean, use those drugs before they expire. Wasting them would be a sin, right?

Ohhhhhh yeahhhh nothing like a good ol state sanctioned killing amirite?!
