They haven’t because nothing bad has happened to them yet. If they don’t vaccinate and stay healthy think they’ve been proven right instead of just being really fucking lucky/benefitting from everyone else’s vaccinations.

At the end of the video on ABC, it said that she lost friends for vaxinating her kids? Think about that for a minute, the peer pressure to not vax was so intense that after her family fought a deadly disease and finally wised up, her ‘friends’ peaced out on her. WTF is wrong with people.

I’m still concerned at how many lay people think they are qualified to review, process, and synthesize scientific information. As if these random people have the knowledge necessary to determine whether the scientific information is viable or not. If the vast majority of pediatricians support vaccines, what makes you

Yeah it takes some guts to do a very public mea culpa. And I hope it reaches some other stubborn people. I can’t hate on her.

Also, dismissing experts in the field and instead going with non-experts who validate your personal beliefs.

yes. our nation is WOEFULLY lacking in critical thinking skills.

“I put my kids at risk”

It’s not only that, it’s that people don’t know how to critically evaluate the sources that they find. They think everything on the internet is true and if someone wrote something, it must be correct. Look at the damn source and THINK about it.

My MIL is (was) a nurse and is anti-vax (or at least very skeptical of them). She’s also into “alternative medicine” and thinks “big pharma” is faking data and doctors don’t actually want us to be healthy and flouride in the water is a conspiracy.

Photojournalists capture the precise moment when O’Meara realizes her former idiocy:

I know it’s tempting to make fun of O’Meara. But she revised her views and reconsidered when new evidence came into view. Most would have gotten there quicker. But at least she’s being vocal about her prior ignorance now.

“I scoured everything I could possibly find about why vaccines might be harmful. I became pretty convinced.”

I’m amazed a teacher went all that time without catching and spreading something worse to her family. Schools are a Petri dish of disease. I guess that’s just proof that herd immunity does work.

I’m glad it wasn’t anything worse than rotavirus that helped to convince her. This could have had a much more tragic ending.

Well it’s a shame it took her whole family getting sick but it’s refreshing to hear an anti-vaxxer say “I was wrong, I was batshit, I’ve since researched and have changed my mind”.

At least she is willing to reassess her opinions and learn from her mistakes. I wish more anti-vaxxers were able to do this.
