I started to walk home within five minutes when I was in a similar situation (not a lifethreatening one though) so I find it plausible.

There is someone else here claiming it was fifteen minutes but I think that even just five minutes could be enough.

Honestly I expected there to be more people sharing stories of when they had been left behind by their parents.
