Well for me the humor goes hand in hand with real tragedy. the show isn't just a joke machine.

I really like that the show is bringing out the darker elements of Kimmy's kidnapping, even beyond her stunted development or the other Mole Women's problems. It would be really easy for the show to brush it off and be a joke machine.

I think the conflict between charming Jon Hamm being wacky and horrible rapist kidnapper is precisely the intention of the writers. They didn't just cast Jon Hamm on a whim, but because of his offscreen persona of Stunningly Handsome White Man Who is Funny and Likable
