World leaders spoke out against the coup because Turkey is a strategic ally (particularly against ISIS) and their relationship with Erdogan is already shaky at best, so they were hedging their bets.
A lot of world leaders didn’t offer strong statements until after the attempt had failed. More a case of ‘hey Erdogan, we are still friends, right?’, than a show of support.
Turkey has a history of Coups. They do it when the govt gets too religious. Islam is taking over their laws and freedom.
