@The world will know squalor.: No worries. I was eyeballing it, but thought it looked too short, which is why this particular hack is sort of genius.

It's also worth noting that Luxottica also owns Sunglass Hut, Lenscrafters, I seem to remember they bought our Pearle Vision too, and more than likely the sunglass kiosk in your local mall staffed by 22-year old guys with slicked-back hair and cheap dress shirts. They're a 10-million-pound gorilla in the industry.

I used to work in a sunglass shop. This whole thing makes more sense if you think of designer glasses like you think of designer jeans. Sure, a $30 pair of Wranglers will do the same job, but not look as good. Much in the same way, a $400+ pair of glasses won't do much more than the cheapies, but you'll look cool, or

Two things: Man the Apple Lisa was ugly, and is that a clever bit of Photoshopping or did that ad actually say "Pre-order iPhone"?

@talkingstove: If you hit T on your keyboard while in Street View, it will go into blue/red old-school 3d. I haven't tested it with glasses yet, but it appears like it would work.

The (sadly discontinued—check Craigslist!) Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 or 4.1 speakers are ideal for this. My roommate and I have the 2.1s running out of his HTPC, and they work fantastically well.

@shrik: The keyboard shortcuts do, for the most part, still work. In the dull days of 1994-ish, when I had a very low-intensity job, I actually went through Word, Ctrl-1 through Ctrl-Z, then Ctrl-Shift-1 through Ctrl-Shift-Z (and Ctrl-Alt, etc.) and had a document that detailed every single keystroke command. I still

@TheFu: As they've said, sadly, it's the ribbon. I've been using the beta since the end of November, I'm still not used to it at all.

I tried Trillian again after the Great Digsby Panic of Ought-Nine, and the UI (specifically the options menu) is still just absolutely terrible, and virtually the same as it was in 2001.

These comparisons confuse me terribly. The winner of a media player video-off is weighted by startup time? Perhaps I'm an outlier with regard to how I use such programs, but I'd consider how well they actually play media to be an important factor.

For the sake of us that open multiple windows in the background at once, please turn off Autoplay! I thought I had the Belafonte virus.

Opera's page zoom scales Flash up when you increase the zoom. I haven't tried, but I'd guess combining that with the F11/Full Screen command would do a reasonable facsimile of this program.

@ninedosus: Once you have a reference other than IE, it's really remarkable how average Firefox is.

Weird. The only time I go to [google.com] is when I need to remember what it looks like (or to check out that sweet fade-in feature they added a month or two back). And iGoogle has never clicked for me—Netvibes makes adding content a significantly smoother experience, even if its AJAX wonderland brings a browser to

So...let me get this straight: This time-saving tip consists of manually pinging all the sites you visit regularly, typing those IP addresses into your browser, making sure the site resolves properly, then bookmarking them with a plain-text name so you can find them easily, all in order to save time getting around a

I simply won't buy any ebooks (or readers) that come with DRM. I got really excited when Jobs mentioned they're using the "open ePub" format for the iPad.
