I don’t stand for GBA because (a) it’s not the National Anthem so I don’t treat it as such and (b) I’m a fellow god-non-believer. I’m happy to say I’ve never been given shit over it by anyone around me. I think the PA at the park even finally stopped saying “please rise and remove your hats” for GBA, which I thought

Add to this baseball’s obsession with camo uniforms and endless military worship with religious overtones on Memorial Day, July 4, Mondays (looking at you you, Mets), Sundays (the minor league teams in NYC), or any day at all, really - do I really have to stand for God Bless America when I have no belief in a god? And

I went to a small Christian college (shudder) and all the DVDs and books in the library had the same disclaimer sticker informing the viewer/reader that “the enemy” (i.e., Satan) sows “tares among the wheat”— i.e., that what we watched/read might not fit with our beliefs.

Especially when the pile on is all people who are wrong. I had like 20 people tell me I was wrong about a fact regarding German history. Then when I replied to every last one of them with a link proving I was correct, someone accused me of being “spammy”. No, I’m just DROPPING SOME KNOWLEDGE ON YOU PLEBS!

Thanks, and well, I fucking hope so. Someone has to try non apathetically.

I just can’t wait for the same people who whine that trigger warnings are political correctness gone mad and that liberals are so easily offended to call this brave. You know, because wanting a warning about graphic rape scenes for genuine PTSD and anxiety is wanting to be coddled, but demanding that a book with teh

I’m sure death could be triggering for some. There is just a limit to what a course can protect students from encountering. You can’t read literature and NEVER encounter death. If you’re triggered by rape, you’re probably not signing up for a class in feminist studies all about rape, you know?

I really hope this doesn’t become a pile on with like everyone misunderstanding your joke and telling you that you’re wrong even though you already said it was a joke.
Kinja pile ons are literally the most annoying thing ever.

I would rather have them there for students who need them than not have them at all, which is why in my syllabus I clearly state what kind of material could be triggering in the course as a whole and give students the option on the first day to make inquiries as to the specifics. So for instance, my current syllabus

I feel like there’s a lot of misunderstanding around what a TW is and what being triggered means. I mean maybe those students really and truly are triggered by death - maybe there was some trauma with it in the past and it’s triggering to their PTSD or what have you. I suppose that’s possible. But I do wish that

Yeah, as the person who actually has to deal with people’s trigger warnings, for every legitimate talk a student had has with me about concerns, you get at least 2 who are like “I cant read about death, it’s too triggering” to get out of reading, like, Frankenstein. I know that people’s hearts are in a good place when

The only time Trigger Warnings are accepted is in cases where the material could be considered a “trigger” for those with trauma. Rape. Violence. Etc. I had a student say that anything discussing death was triggering for her and I calmly explained that it’s impossible to read literature without ever encountering death

Oh, okay, sorry. :)
TWs are a touchy subject and a lot of people misunderstand them, to say the least.
