I am totally on your side of this argument, but I do have part of an answer for your question.

The UK has a workforce participation rate of 78.3%, the US has a workforce participation rate of 62.6%. So nearly 4/5 in the UK pay into the programs to benefit the remaining 21.7%, while in the US ~3/5 are expected to cary 37.4%.
