I’ve heard of people doing this and I’ve never understood why. Yes, barking can be annoying, but dogs usually bark for a reason. If a shy dog is barking at me, I know to give that dog some space. Taking away a dog’s ability to bark and growl and you could very well end up with a dog that bites someone.

I can sort of see how parents would be afraid to jeopardize their kids chances at a gold medal (although the atmosphere that makes people afraid of complaining is definitely another problem). But I definitely judge any coaches or US gymnastics officials who saw that rule and thought, “yup, good idea.”

I hope so too. One of the things that stuck out to me from a previous article was that Maroney’s parents weren’t allowed to travel with her to competitions or stay in the same hotel she was staying at. How was that ever allowed to be a rule? How could people not see how that rule could be exploited?

Anytime someone defends a harasser/assaulter, I assume it’s because they’re a harasser/assaulter themselves.
Also, therapy is expensive, and PTSD can make it hard to work. I can think of all sorts of reasons to take a settlement.
