I'd do something similar. But the problem is I tend to play with stuff. I'd probably keep messing with the peg while reading. And I'm really controlling myself, my brother is far worse than me. His wife goes nuts with all he does to objects while reading or talking on the phone.

I think they should come up with a better system than "just" reducing their prison time. They should use this energy to power the prison itself (not locks, of course). But the lights in the cells and TV (I think they have one). Would spare a lot of energy. If they want light and TV, go ahead and work it out.
