Good idea. The fact that the game takes place inside Brainiac’s bottle could also “explain” a level-up mechanic for Sups and why he is not in full power (Superman in full power is not very game friendly material ;) ). 

For being what seemed like a cash-in Mortal Kombat clone, it had a surprisingly good story. And as Ganon mentioned, there’s also a comic series that’s been going on since the game released, showing the 5 years between Superman going crazy and the start of the first game. The comics are also pretty damn good.

Not only that, but a regular comic series that’s been going since the original release. There’s a whole five years time skip at the start of Injustice, and the comics have been telling that story.

I always thought Brainiac would make a good villain for an Arkham style game for Superman. Have it a big sandbox, but the reason Superman can’t go beyond the Metropolis city limits is because the whole area is stuck inside one of Brainiac’s bottles or forcefields.
